Religious Life of the School

Structure of the Religious Life of the School

The Religious Life of the School P-12 is focused on the second dimension of Religious Education, commonly referred to as “teaching people to be religious in a particular way” (Moran, 1991). The Religious Life of the School P-12 provides a lens through which a school may audit and further develop its religious life.

The Religious Life of the School P-12 comprises four interrelated components: Religious Identity and Culture; Evangelisation and Faith Formation; Prayer and Worship; and Social Action and Justice. Each of these components, while mutually reinforcing, provides a significant focus on a distinctive aspect of the religious life of the school. Each component is further sub-divided into three elements as the graphic organiser below indicates.

The image is a circular diagram illustrating the Catholic Life of the School. At the centre is a circular photograph collage showing students, staff and community members participating in school life, learning, prayer and service activities. Surrounding the central image are four large coloured segments, each representing a key focus area: Religious Identity & Culture (red): includes themes such as authentic Christian community, ethics and morality, living the school’s values, and a sense of the sacred. Prayer & Worship (green): highlights celebrating liturgy, recognising ritual, personal and communal prayer, and growing in a prayerful life. Evangelisation & Faith Formation (yellow): focuses on living the Gospel, spiritual formation, and witnessing to the wider community. Social Action & Justice (purple): includes action of justice, inclusion of all, connection of faith and life, and promotion of the common good. Each focus area contains smaller inner segments describing related practices and values, forming a continuous, integrated circle around the centre. The overall design conveys that these four areas are interconnected and collectively shape the Catholic life and culture of the school.
